Database-as-a-Service

Overview

Database-as-a-Service is a highly available and scalable cloud based relational database platform built on Microsoft SQL Server or Oracle Real Application Clusters. With this service, developers can eliminate the hassles and time required to install, configure, maintain and manage database server software. Yet developers have easy access to the same powerful development and management tools used for traditional database deployments.

Database-as-a-Service provides enterprise-class Oracle 11G RAC and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 databases with the advantages of cloud computing ─ no software licensing lock-ins, and no hardware provisioning ─ in an on-demand, self-service, pay-per-use, model. In addition, this service gives customers the enterprise security and scalability necessary to meet even the most demanding business requirements.

Features

Adirondack Networks has formed a partnership with Savvis, a best-in-class cloud provider to deliver fully managed database environments with performance levels and availability on par with traditional data centers.

Database-as-a-Service includes:

  • Database Management: The Database portal is designed to be used in conjunction with database management tools like SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) or popular database access tools including SQL*Plus and TOAD. There are very few limitations from a traditional environment in regards to database management and design.
  • Assured Access: Guaranteed compute capacity and resources. All database subscriptions have a flat fee for compute tier resources plus usage based tiered storage fees based on GBs used for data, log and backup files.
  • Network speed and bandwidth: No charges for bandwidth and no ‘throttling’ of bandwidth. Traffic external to the datacenter has a guarantee of 1 Gigabit (assuming the connection coming from the source is 1 Gigabit or larger).
  • Secure and protected data: Employs dedicated database firewalling and dedicated database port that is open only to the customer’s chosen IP addresses. Database hardening guidelines are followed from Oracle, Microsoft, and the Center for Internet Security. The service provides recovery solutions, 24/7 systems monitoring, fully encrypted database connections, and an option to encrypt data at rest.
  • Availability: The service provides a target 99.99% SLA regardless of the compute tier purchased or mirroring being enabled.
  • Robust cloud portal: Offers the customer a powerful tool to manage all aspects of the service including detailed usage reporting (view and download) and dashboards where trending and usage to date graphs are provided.
  • Firewall: Dedicated firewall rules and a TCP TDS listener in MSSQL and a dedicated SQLNet Listener Port in Oracle.
  • SFTP Access: Securely import or export a schema or database into the backup folder area (.DMP or .BAK and .TRN and .CER / .PVK)

Technical Specifications

  • The database service provides a target 99.99% SLA regardless of the compute tier purchased or mirroring being enabled.
  • Network Performance
    • Traffic within the datacenter operates at a 10Gbps transfer rate.
    • Traffic external to the datacenter operates at the line speed of the connection from end to end, but has a guarantee of 1Gbps (assuming the connection coming from the source is 1Gbps or larger)
  • Storage Performance
    • Data file storage space is RAID 5 Fibre Channel SAN Storage
    • Backup storage space is RAID 5 SATA SAN Storage
    • Log storage is used to store all of the transaction log files for Microsoft SQL and redo log storage for Oracle is shared and is RAID 10 Fibre Channel SAN Storage
  • Encryption Details
    • Supports Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) of the databases for encryption at rest and also support the EncryptByPassPhrase function (SQLServer) or dbms_crypto (oracle) allowing the customer to encrypt cell level data in their database with a passphrase and salt free of charge.
    • All connections to Database-as-a-Service are encrypted using the same type of technology used for HTTPs (SSL) connections. Use certificates from Verisign/GeoTrust and have configured both Oracle and MSSQL to refuse unencrypted connections and to softly convert all connections to an encrypted connection when they are not encrypted by the client.
  • Typical Storage Space Utilization
    • Microsoft SQL: a typical database will be 75% data storage (commonly .MDF & .NDF files); Oracle: a typical schema will be 75-85% data storage (tablespace), depending on ‘whitespace’ in each table’s data.
    • Microsoft SQL: a daily full backup is created and all folders other than the Archive folder have content retention policies deleting all contents older than 4 days. Customers can expect 160% of their database size in backup storage.
    • Oracle: a daily full export is created and all folders other than the Archive folder have content retention policies deleting all contents older than 4 days. Customers can expect approximately 60% of their database size in an export.
    • Microsoft SQL: a typical database will be 25% log storage (commonly .LDF files); Oracle: Included in the Service Tier price.
    • When a customer enables mirroring transaction log backups are taken every 4 hours (at minimum) and are also maintained for 4 days, these backups are directly related to Log storage usage. Mirrors also invoke mirrored backups which double backup usage.
    • No limit on the size of data brought into the environment, and no data commitment
  • Monitoring and Reporting
    • Service provides detailed usage reporting as part of the database service. This in electronic format for view and download from the SavvisStation Portal. The usage addendum is viewable and downloadable in Microsoft Excel (.xls) format
    • Customers can also keep an eye on usage through the SavvisStation Orchestrator dashboards where trending and usage to date graphs are provided.
  • World-Class Data Centers
    • Choice of Santa Clara CA, Sterling, VA or Slough, UK locations
    • Construction – purpose built as a data center
    • Power – UPS plant, Generators, PDU systems
    • Fire Suppression – VESDA, Smoke & Heat detection with pre-action water system and/or FM-200
    • Security – 24×7 camera monitored locally and remotely
    • Network egress – physically diverse o Facility monitoring – 24 x 7 x 365
